Hi. My name is Paul May, and I appreciate you stopping by our adventure.
About Equipt
Equipt opened for business in March of 2006, but had been in the works for much longer. One fateful August evening in 2005, I met a remarkable couple from South Africa. They were traveling from Argentina to Alaska in a Troopie they called “Tubby Explorer”. By sheer luck on my part, they travelled through Salt Lake City. We arranged a meeting while they were passing through to visit with our local Land Cruiser Club. How was I to know that this couple would change my life.
Jack and Margaret are a wonderful couple, full of life and experiences of the world. They were traveling the way most of us dream of. My wife and I spent several evenings with them, and we really hit it off. Conversation shifted to their vehicle, as it often does, and I became aware that Jack was an integral part of Eezi Awn. Jack asked me if I knew anyone interested in representing their company in the US. Unbeknownst to them, I had been looking for a life change. I answered Jack with, “I just might know a guy”. After one of many sleepless nights to come, I told Jack I wanted to start a company to represent Eezi Awn. I met Jack again in November in Houston as Tubbie was getting loaded up to be shipped home. We finalized the deal with a look in the eye and a handshake. That’s how it should be done. Jack took a chance on me. I am sure glad he did.
It’s been several years since our fateful start, and we are still going strong. We are a growing company, mindful of the integrity and customer service our clientele deserve. Our focus has sharpened since our humble beginnings. We are more clearly defining what we do and who we want to be. We are proud to be the leading North American importer of vehicle based expedition equipment. We now represent Eezi Awn, National Luna, and Front Runner brands. There are no better brands in the market today. When the vehicle you drive is your lifeline, you can’t afford second best. We won’t let you down.
About Us
My wife Heather and our black lab Dezi have been expanding our expeditionary odyssey together for some time now. Heather joined the trek 12 years ago. I was lucky enough to find a companion with the same wanderlust I have held my whole life. Dezi is the consummate trail leader, has been wheeling Moab with me since she was 6 weeks old, and can catch a tennis ball at 60 yards on the fly. What else can a guy ask for?
I have been wandering this great planet for over just over 30 years now. It started with a 60 mile backpacking trip in the Uintas at 10, and the latest chapter is this shop. During the way I have traveled through cultures around the world, experienced the gambit of adventure by backpack, canoe, raft, mountain and road bike. I have challenged the 4+ trails of Moab and Rubicon, and experienced the most remote corners the western US has to offer. I have learned much about the delicacy of our wilderness and the importance of respectfully maintaining the balance of conservation and access.
I have had the honor to be involved with Wasatch Cruisers, a TLCA Chapter, for the last 7 years, and the privilege to have served as their President in 2004. This organization has expanded my relationships with like minded souls nationwide.
My motorized modes of travel have evolved from an early jeep CJ3A, two Scouts, a Land Rover Series IIA 109 RHD, and a Series III 88. I rebuilt a ’76 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ40 with too many extras to mention, and still own it. My latest vehicle is a ’99 Land Cruiser UZJ100, with a bunch of goodies.
While roaming as much as I could, I also earned undergraduate degrees in Economics and Political Science, as well as a Master in Business Administration. For the last 20+ years I have been managing all things administrative for an Electrical Contractor in SLC. It gave me the freedom to pursue my passion of exploration and extended travel.
It is from this diverse background that I have amassed what I feel is a level of experience sufficient to assist others in their own pursuits. Whether it’s an overnight stay, or an extended overland adventure, I am sure I can help you make the best of it and get you home safe. Thanks again for stopping by.
