Fridge Troubleshooting

Most National Luna fridge issues come down to power and wiring rather than the fridge itself. Work through the steps below for your symptom, and if you’re still stuck, contact us — National Luna fridges are the gear we support most.

Power & Wiring

My fridge won’t turn on

Start at the power source. Confirm the outlet or battery you’re plugged into is live, the plug is fully seated, and the fuse on the fridge’s power cable — and on the vehicle circuit feeding it — is intact. Make sure the circuit is rated for the fridge’s draw and that every connection is clean and tight. Undersized or long wiring runs cause a voltage drop that can stop the fridge from starting even when everything looks connected. If you’ve confirmed good power and connections and there’s still nothing, contact us.

Runs on shore power but not in the vehicle (or vice-versa)

If the fridge runs fine on one power source but not the other, the problem is almost always the vehicle wiring or that power source — not the fridge. Test the fridge on the other source to isolate where the fault is, then check that input’s cable and fuse and verify the vehicle circuit is delivering proper voltage at the fridge under load. If both inputs are sound and it still won’t run, contact us with what you found.

Battery Protection & Voltage

It keeps shutting off or shows a low-voltage fault

National Luna 12V fridges have a built-in battery-protection cutoff with Low, Medium, and High settings that shut the fridge down to protect your battery. On the High setting, normal voltage sag can trip it. Try a lower setting first. Then check for voltage drop from undersized or long wiring and loose terminals, and measure voltage at the fridge while it’s running, not at the battery. A weak or discharged battery will also trip the cutoff. If it faults while voltage at the fridge is genuinely healthy, contact us.

Which battery-protection setting should I use?

Use a lower setting when the fridge runs on a dedicated or auxiliary battery you monitor, and a higher setting when you need to protect a starter battery from being drained. If you’re not sure, start lower and make sure your wiring is adequate so normal voltage sag doesn’t trip the cutoff.

Cooling Performance

It’s running but not getting cold enough

Give it several hours to pull down, especially if it’s loaded with warm contents. Keep it out of direct sun, leave airflow space around the vents, and don’t overpack it. Minimize how often you open the lid, pre-chill contents when you can, and confirm your temperature setpoint. Also make sure the battery protection isn’t cutting the compressor early. If it runs constantly without ever reaching the setpoint, contact us.

It runs constantly

Running constantly is common in hot weather, with a warm load, in direct sun, or with blocked vents. Improve airflow and shade, and let the fridge stabilize. If it keeps running constantly and still isn’t cooling well, contact us.

Noises & Fault Codes

It clicks when it starts or stops

A brief click as the compressor cycles can be normal. But a repeated click paired with a failure to start — start, click, stop, repeat — usually means the compressor can’t get going, most often because of low voltage or voltage drop. Verify the voltage at the fridge under load and check your wiring first. If voltage is healthy and it still won’t start, contact us.

It’s showing a fault or error code

Note the exact code and what the fridge is doing. Check voltage and wiring first, since that’s the most common cause of fault codes on 12V fridges. Then contact us with your model, the code, and what you’ve already checked so we can help quickly.

Warranty & Support

Does my fridge need warranty service?

National Luna fridges carry a 3-year limited manufacturer warranty, and we service claims from our Salt Lake City facility. If you’ve worked through the steps above and need a hand, contact us with your order number, model, and a description of the issue — including any fault codes or photos — to start a claim. You can find more detail on our warranty page.
