Why I Pay More for a National Luna - And Why I'd Do It Again Every Time
National Luna fridges were born from a WHO vaccine project in Africa, so every unit carries true medical-grade, zero-failure engineering. Their design — high-density injected insulation, full-perimeter aluminum cooling, purpose-built off-road compressor, and true dual-zone control — delivers independently verified, class-leading efficiency that protects both your food and your battery on long, solar-powered trips. Combined with National Luna’s integrated 12V ecosystem, that reliability is why we run and recommend them for serious expedition builds.
Do you need an inverter?
While inverters let you run 120V AC household devices from a 12V vehicle system, they add significant cost, complexity, and inefficiency, especially for high-wattage appliances like coffee makers and induction cooktops. For most expedition setups focused on fridges, lights, comms, and laptops, a DC-first design with 12V-native chargers is simpler, cheaper, and more efficient than adding an inverter. Inverters are best reserved for mission-critical AC-only tools, medical/scientific equipment, or occasional AC loads supported by a properly sized lithium battery bank.
Equipt's choice for portable solar - Overland Solar
We don't want to toot our own horn, but we know power and we know overlanding, so naturally we know all about overlanding power systems. Ask anyone. Listen in for our top choice when it comes to portable solar and get truly off the grid.
Overland Vehicle Basics: Electrical Systems
There's a lot to know about vehicle-based electrical systems and our brand of choice, National Luna, is who we consider to be the best in the business, which is why we exclusively carry their products. These systems are not the easiest to understand for beginners and this video aims to answer a lot of the questions we regularly receive to help you better understand how to go off-the-grid with power.
What Size Fridge Do I Need?
National Luna fridge sizing is simpler than cooler sizing because you eliminate ice, so a smaller liter capacity often holds more usable food than your old cooler. Match capacity to your party and space: 40–52L for 1–2 people, 55–60L for 3–4, 72–90L for 5–6+ or Sprinter installs, and 110–125L for van/off‑grid Systems, choosing Dual Control when you need independent fridge/freezer zones. If you’re between sizes, go smaller when cargo space is tight and larger when you have room and travel with others, and only prioritize 60mm insulation if you plan to deep-freeze regularly.
