NL 72 vs. NL 90 National Luna's Most Popular Large-Format Fridges, Head to Head

Paul MayPaul May

The NL 72 and NL 90 share the same footprint, price, and dual-zone Legacy Smart QC platform, but the 90L gains 18L of interior volume by using mixed 40–60mm insulation, which limits its right compartment to -18°C (0°F) instead of the NL 72’s -24°C (-11°F) in both zones. Choose the NL 72 if you need maximum insulation and true deep-freeze capability in both compartments for extreme heat, dual-freezer use, or sensitive cargo; choose the NL 90 if you want more practical fridge/freezer volume for family or group overlanding, with fully adequate -18°C freezer performance in the same space. Both offer independent dual controls, identical connectivity and controls, similar real-world energy use, and are backed by a 3-year U.S.-based Equipt service warranty.

Same footprint. Same price. Very different fridges.

NL 72 OR NL 90: HERE'S HOW TO CHOOSE

The NL 72 and NL 90 sit at the top of the National Luna lineup and get compared
more than any other two models we carry. Same footprint, same price, same Legacy
Smart QC platform — but meaningfully different specs that point to different use
cases. This breakdown covers every distinction worth knowing.

SAME FOOTPRINT, MORE INTERIOR

Closed dimensions: 32.87 × 19.49 × 20.67 inches (835 × 495 × 525 mm) for both
models. If a 72L fits in your vehicle, the 90L fits too. Your vehicle geometry is
not a factor in this decision.

The extra 18 liters come entirely from interior optimization. The right-side
compartment grows from 33.0L to 46.2L — 13 additional liters in the same shell.
The 90L achieves this by using a mixed 40–60mm insulation approach rather than
the 72L's uniform 60mm throughout. National Luna's high-pressure foam injection
keeps even the thinner walls denser and more effective than the looser foam in
most competitor designs.

INSULATION AND TEMPERATURE RANGE: WHERE THEY DIVERGE

NL 72 — 60mm throughout, both zones reach -24°C (-11°F).
Uniform maximum insulation means both compartments can be pushed to deep-freeze
territory. The model of choice if you're running a dual-freezer configuration,
carrying medications, or want maximum thermal retention in extreme heat.

NL 90 — 40mm to 60mm mixed, right zone max is -18°C (0°F).
The larger right compartment trades a bit of insulation thickness for volume.
-18°C is fully adequate for meat, frozen meals, and ice cream — but if you need
both zones below -18°C, the 72 is your unit. The left zone reaches -24°C on
both models.

LID DESIGN: SAME RESULT, DIFFERENT APPROACH

NL 72 — two separate exterior lids, one per zone.
Open the fridge side, the freezer lid stays down and sealed. Simple and
intuitive.

NL 90 — single exterior lid with an interior clear lid over the freezer zone.
The full top opens as one, but the left (freezer) compartment has a clear
interior lid that stays in place during fridge access. When you need the freezer,
you lift that inner lid separately. Bonus: you can see into the freezer zone
without opening it — useful for a quick inventory check without losing cold air.

On both models, the freezer zone stays covered during routine fridge access.
The 72's dual exterior lids feel more intuitive day-to-day; the 90's single
outer lid with interior clear cover works well but requires loading awareness.

ENERGY CONSUMPTION: CLOSER THAN YOU'D EXPECT

Neither model publishes specific amp-hour figures — real-world draw varies too
much with ambient temperature and usage patterns. Both use the same Off-Road
Compressor (Turbo mode to pull down, Idle mode to maintain), so the difference
comes down to insulation and volume.

In typical use, the efficiency gap is marginal. The 72's uniform 60mm walls have
a slight edge in sustained deep-freeze operation at high ambient temps. The 90's
larger thermal mass can mean less frequent compressor cycling once it's
stabilized. For most overlanders, neither difference will be noticeable in daily
use.

DUAL CONTROL TECHNOLOGY: GENUINELY INDEPENDENT ZONES

Both models use National Luna's Dual Control Technology — two thermostats, one
compressor, fully independent temperature management in each compartment. Set
-18°C in one zone and +4°C in the other, and both hold independently.

On the NL 72, both zones reach -24°C. On the NL 90, the left zone reaches -24°C
and the right is limited to -18°C. For a standard fridge/freezer setup, the
difference is irrelevant. It only matters if you need both zones in deep-freeze
territory simultaneously.

CONNECTIVITY AND CONTROLS: SAME FEATURE SET

No difference here. Both are full Legacy Smart QC models: NL Connect Bluetooth
app for remote monitoring and control of both zones, real-time alerts, Quick
Connect panel that repositions front-to-side without tools, and two integrated
USB charge ports.

WHO SHOULD BUY THE NL 72?

The 72 is the right call if you need deep-freeze capability in both zones —
dual-freezer configurations, hunting trips, pharmaceutical transport, or any
application requiring below -18°C across the board. The uniform 60mm insulation
also gives it a slight edge for extreme-heat operation over extended periods.

WHO SHOULD BUY THE NL 90?

Most overlanders. If you're running a standard fridge/freezer setup for a family
or group, the 90 gives you 18 more liters in the same footprint at the same
price. -18°C in the freezer zone covers everything real-world use demands. It's
also the Equipt team's go-to recommendation for Sprinter and van lateral slide
installs.

THE BOTTOM LINE

National Luna built two genuinely different fridges into the same exterior shell.
That engineering achievement — 18 extra liters without changing the footprint —
is worth appreciating on its own terms.

The NL 72 is the right choice if insulation uniformity and maximum freeze depth
across both zones matter to you. The 60mm walls throughout deliver the best
thermal retention in extreme conditions and the flexibility to push both
compartments to -24°C.

The NL 90 is the right choice for the majority of family overlanders and serious
campers who want more food storage in the same space. -18°C in the freezer zone
is more than adequate for real-world use, and 90 liters of dual-zone storage in
the NL's compact footprint is hard to match at any price.

Both are backed by a 3-year warranty serviced by Equipt here in the United
States — no overseas shipping, no third-party service centers. That's a support
story no overseas brand can match.
